The Georgian Bay Cancer Support Centre is a place of hope and vitality to those living with cancer and their caregivers. Programs are offered free to cancer survivors, their families and immediate caregivers. No medical referral is necessary.
Our programs are selected for their evidence-based contributions to the psycho-social well-being of our members.
Our exercise and wellness programs are designed to reduce stress and support functional fitness through surgery, treatment and recovery.
Yoga is well known for its ability to relieve stress. Practicing yoga during cancer has been reported by participants to aid in building resiliency, creating a feeling of mental toughness, relieving stress and helping to increase relaxation.
Yoga for Symptom Relief
This program is offered to members who are newly diagnosed, in treatment or recovering from treatment/surgery. It has a greater focus on breathing and relaxation for pain and stress management.
Chi Gong (Qigong)
The gentle, rhythmic movements of Qigong reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system.
Strength and Tone
Light intensity fitness class to increase strength, coordination and range of motion through balance and rotation exercises.
Meditation and Reflection
Mindfulness, imagery and visualization assist with the practice of stilling the mind to support physical health, decrease emotional stress, increase mental focus and access to higher spiritual consciousness.
Reiki (by appointment)
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on energy technique to improve and balance the flow of life energy in a person; thereby restoring physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual well-being. Offered twice per month by qualified practitioners.
Drumming lowers both blood pressure and stress hormones. Drumming is also meditative, inducing relaxed mental states that help to reduce anxiety and tension.
Comfort Touch Massage
Fully clothed, seated massage is used to reduce pain, anxiety and stress, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being. Offered twice per month by registered massage therapists.
Support groups can help you cope by providing a safe place to share feelings and challenges and to learn from others who are facing similar situations.
Individual Spiritual Support
Our new interfaith spiritual support program is available to everyone – no religion required. Feel free to drop in and chat. We know our bodies can get tired but the Spirit gets run down too!
New Member Support Group
Facilitated support group for members within the first year of diagnosis.
Caregiver Support Group
Our goal is to share and learn from each other’s life circumstances; with particular attention paid to increasing our stress management strategies.
Our Peer Supporters have experience with a cancer diagnosis or as caregivers.
Women’s Support Group/Men’s Support Group
These monthly groups are led by trained facilitators in a, confidential setting.
Our Member Navigator can be available for in-person and telephone support on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Call the office to make an appointment.
Men’s Group Support
Get together for coffee and chat with a trained facilitator who knows and understands the challenges of living with cancer – as a survivor and a caregiver.
